Children and Family Minister Job Description

 The purpose of the Children and Family Minister is to foster a loving and safe environment for children ages birth-5th grade and their families, teaching them the Scriptures and equipping the leaders as a part of the total church mission. This Minister will also oversee the publicity and recreational ministries of the church, seeking to provide fellowship for our members and outreach to our community. 

The Children and Family Minister will provide oversight in the following areas, delegating tasks and responsibilities when possible and fostering a team approach to ministry:


Oversee the Children’s Ministry Team

  • Build and lead a team to plan and organize monthly events for children and their families that also serve as an outreach for the church
  • Schedule and lead a minimum of quarterly planning meetings with the team
  • Represent the children’s ministry at the bi-annual church council and give a report at the annual church conference
  • Publicize events and activities involving children by providing information to be included in the bulletin, making announcements in worship, as well as utilizing the church sign, social media and bulletin boards

Oversee Sunday Morning Children’s Ministry

  • Recruit and train leaders
  • Create and distribute schedule for pre-k through 5th grade for Sunday school and worship hour
  • Serve as a lead teacher for the children’s bible study during the 10:30am worship service
  • Sort and deliver curriculum and make sure all needed supplies and resources are provided to the teachers to help them succeed
  • Keep up with children’s attendance and reach out to the inactive

Oversee Nursery/Preschool Ministry

  • Work with the Nursery Coordinator in recruiting volunteers for Sunday morning and for special events and functions
  • Make sure classrooms are stocked with supplies and snacks
  • Fill in when vacancies and needs arise
  • Create and distribute schedule for nursery during worship hour

Oversee Wednesday Night Ministry

  • Recruit and schedule volunteers
  • Choose, order and distribute curriculum
  • Serve as a lead teacher
  • Provide frequent mission activities for the children to be involved in

Oversee Vacation Bible School

  • Recruit volunteers and delegate responsibilities when appropriate
  • Work with children’s ministry team to choose theme, obtain and distribute materials
  • Create schedules and rotations
  • Ensure proper registration and adequate promotion of the event is done inside and outside of the church family
  • Research and choose the missions offering that children will participate in that week

Oversee Family Life Ministry

  • Utilize the Family Life Center for recreational activities and events for families in the church
  • Create and lead family oriented outreach events. These can be events geared towards children, but do not have to exclusively be
  • Promote parental involvement through training sessions, workshops and anything else that would benefit them as Christian parents and get them engaged and discipling their kids at home

Oversee Safety in Children’s Department

  • Communicate with the Trustees on any repair needs in the classroom and playground to ensure the safety of the children at Plymouth Church
  • Maintain system for parents and children for check in at the welcome center
  • Vet all new volunteers through interviews and checking sex offender registry
  • Coordinate with the church Security Team to provide opportunities for training in CPR and basic first aid for the Children’s Ministry Team

Oversee Publicity Ministry

  • Ensure Children’s Ministry social media is updated and used for promotion and recruitment
  • Assist Pastor and Publicity Team in all areas of publicity within the church including online presence
  • Ensure that welcome table resources, gift bags, giveaways, guest cards etc. are in stock and being used
  • Create new ways and avenues to promote and publicize the church with the goal of reaching the community for Christ

Oversee Welcome Team Ministry

  • Assist greeters in recruiting and helping make sure the first impression guests have of the church is a positive one
  • Assist the Pastor in following up on guests who fill out a guest card
  • Assist in creating new ways to make the church more welcoming and inviting for guests

Other Duties/Responsibilities/Opportunities

  • The Children and Family Minister will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor
  • Assist the Pastor on Sunday mornings as needed
  • Make budget requests for all areas of the children’s ministry
  • Manage expenses and reimbursements for children’s ministry
  • Assist in Pastoral Care to families dealing with relational or health issues related to their children
  • Be engaged and present at church wide ministries, making the most of opportunities to build relationships with the families of the church
  • Aid with the transition of children from children’s ministry into the youth ministry
